Electrical Fault Finding.
Find It, Fix It.

Safety switch tripping for no reason, lights flickering, a power point that's warm to touch, or part of the house with no power? These annoying, hard-to-pin-down faults get diagnosed properly - tested circuit by circuit until we find the exact cause. Serving Cowra, Canowindra, Grenfell, Woodstock, Boorowa and the wider Central West NSW.

How We Find It

Method, Not Guesswork.

Plenty of electrical faults get "fixed" by swapping parts until the problem seems to go away - which is slow, expensive, and often leaves the real cause hiding. We do the opposite: isolate and test each circuit, narrow the problem down to a single circuit or appliance, then locate the exact fault before touching a repair. It costs less in the end because you're paying to find the problem once, not to replace parts on a hunch.

Divide and conquer - each circuit isolated and tested in turn to narrow the fault to one circuit or one appliance.
Insulation-resistance testing - finds wiring that's breaking down or leaking to earth, even on an intermittent that's behaving at the time.
Thermal check - connections running hot at the board or an outlet show up before they fail completely.
Common rural causes ruled in or out - water ingress, rodent-chewed cabling in roof spaces, a failing appliance, or loose and heat-damaged connections.
A clear written report - what was found, what was fixed, and what to keep an eye on, so you're not left guessing.
Symptoms We Diagnose

Six Faults Worth A Call.

If your home is doing any of these, there's a cause behind it - and it's worth finding before it gets worse. If any of it looks or smells unsafe right now, that's an emergency.

Safety Switch Or Breaker Keeps Tripping

A safety switch or circuit breaker that trips repeatedly, or won't stay reset, means there's a real fault leaking to earth or an overload somewhere. We track down which circuit and why.

Flickering Or Dimming Lights

Lights that flicker or dim - especially when an appliance starts - usually mean a loose connection or an overloaded circuit. A loose connection generates heat, so it's worth finding.

Warm Or Scorched Power Points

A power point or switch that's warm to touch, buzzing, or showing brown scorch marks has a connection failing behind it. This one shouldn't wait - it's a fire risk in the making.

Part Of The House Has No Power

One room or one side of the house dead while the rest is fine points to a fault on a single circuit - a tripped protective device, a broken connection, or damaged cable to trace.

Buzzing, Humming Or Hot Plastic Smell

A buzz or hum from a switch, outlet or the board - or a faint hot-plastic smell - means something is arcing or overheating. Turn off the circuit and call; a strong burning smell is an emergency.

Appliances Tripping The RCD

If plugging in a particular appliance trips the safety switch every time, that appliance is failing - or the circuit it's on has a fault. We confirm which, so you're not replacing the wrong thing.

How We Work

Diagnosed Step By Step.

Fault finding is detective work. We work through it in order so the cause is found once and fixed properly - no chasing symptoms around the house.

Step 1

Describe It

Tell us what's happening and when - which lights, which room, whether it's constant or comes and goes. The pattern usually points straight at where to start testing.

Step 2

Isolate & Test

Each circuit is isolated and tested in turn - divide and conquer - to narrow the fault down to a single circuit or a single appliance rather than the whole house.

Step 3

Locate The Fault

With the circuit identified, insulation-resistance testing and a thermal check pinpoint the exact spot - the loose connection, the water ingress, the chewed cable, or the failing part.

Step 4

Repair & Report

We repair the fault, test that it's gone, and give you a clear written report of what was found and fixed - plus a Certificate of Compliance where the work requires one.

Fault Finding FAQ

Common Questions

A safety switch (RCD) trips when it detects current leaking to earth - usually a faulty appliance, moisture in an outlet or fitting, or degraded wiring. If it resets and stays on after you unplug a particular appliance, that appliance is the culprit. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the fixed wiring and needs finding. We work through each circuit systematically to pin down exactly where the leakage is coming from rather than guessing.
Flickering or dimming lights usually point to a loose connection somewhere - at the light fitting, a switch, a junction, or back at the switchboard. It can also be a failing driver or transformer on LED lights, or a circuit that's overloaded when a big appliance kicks in. Flickering is worth taking seriously because a loose connection generates heat, and heat is how electrical fires start. We find the loose or degraded point and repair it properly.
Fault finding is diagnostic work, so we charge for the time to locate the problem and then quote the repair separately once we know what it is. We'll be straight with you on the phone about how we work before we come out - no surprises. The advantage of a systematic approach is we're not billing you to swap out parts on a hunch; we test to find the actual fault, then fix that.
Yes - intermittent faults are the trickiest but they're findable. The trick is not to chase the symptom but to test the wiring properly. Insulation-resistance testing can reveal a circuit that's breaking down even when it's behaving at that moment, and a thermal check finds connections running hot before they fail completely. If it's an intermittent that only shows in certain weather or when an appliance runs, tell us the pattern - it usually points straight at the cause.
Yes. A burning or hot-plastic smell from an outlet, switch, or the switchboard means something is overheating right now, and that's an emergency - not a routine fault-finding job. Turn off the affected circuit at the board if you know which one it is, don't use the outlet, and call us straight away. See our emergency electrician page for what to do when it's unsafe right now.
Yes. We're based in Cowra and cover the surrounding Central West - Canowindra, Grenfell, Woodstock, Boorowa, and the rural blocks in between. Fault finding on rural properties often turns up rodent-chewed cabling in roof spaces or sheds, which is common out this way, so it's work we do regularly.

If It's More Than A Fault.

Fault finding often reveals a bigger issue - an unsafe situation that can't wait, a board without proper protection, or wiring that's reached the end of its life.
