“What size do I need?” is easily the most common question we get asked about air conditioning here in Cowra. It’s the right question to ask too, because getting the capacity right is the difference between a system that quietly keeps you comfortable and one that costs a fortune to run and never quite gets there.
Why getting the size right matters
Air conditioner capacity is measured in kilowatts (kW) - that’s the amount of heating or cooling the unit can deliver, not how much power it draws. Match that capacity to the room and everything works as it should. Get it wrong in either direction and you’ll feel it.
An undersized unit runs flat out on the hottest days and still struggles to pull the room down to a comfortable temperature. It never gets a rest, which wears it out faster and pushes your running costs up while leaving you sweating.
An oversized unit is the mistake people don’t expect. It cools the room so quickly that it keeps switching off and on again - what we call short-cycling. That means it never runs long enough to properly dehumidify or hold a steady temperature, comfort suffers, wear increases, and you’ve paid more upfront for a bigger unit that runs less efficiently. Bigger is not better.
Rough room-size guidance
As a very general starting point, here’s the sort of capacity that suits different spaces. Treat these as ballpark ranges only - not exact promises - because the room’s shape, aspect and construction all shift the numbers:
- Small bedroom or study (up to around 20 square metres): roughly 2.5 to 3.5kW
- Medium bedroom or a modest living area (around 20 to 40 square metres): roughly 5 to 6kW
- Large open-plan living, kitchen and dining (40 square metres and up): roughly 7 to 9kW, sometimes more
If your space falls between these, or you’re cooling several connected rooms, that’s exactly where a proper measure-up earns its keep.
The extra factors out here in the Central West
Those room-size numbers are just the starting line. A few things specific to homes around Cowra can push the right capacity up or down:
Ceiling height. Standard guidance assumes ordinary ceilings. Older Central West homes and newer builds with raked or high ceilings hold a lot more air volume, so they need more capacity than the floor area alone suggests.

A multi-head system runs several indoor units off a single outdoor unit, so you can condition several bedrooms or separate zones without an outdoor box on every wall. It’s a tidy solution for whole-home comfort, though each indoor head still needs to be sized for its own room. Sometimes two separate single-head systems actually work out better than one multi-head - it depends on your layout and how you use the rooms.
