Charging Your EV at Home in Cowra: What You Need to Know

More Cowra households are picking up electric vehicles, and out here in the Central West - where a run to Orange or Bathurst and back can chew through your range - charging at home overnight makes a lot of sense. Here’s what you actually need to know before you plug in.
The “granny charger” is fine in a pinch, but slow
Every EV comes with a portable lead that plugs into a normal 10-amp power point. Electricians call it a “granny charger”. It works, but it’s slow: you’re typically looking at only around 10km of range added per hour. Leave it on all night and you might claw back a partial charge, which is fine if you only do short local trips.
A dedicated wall charger is a different story. A common 7kW home charger adds roughly 40km of range per hour (figures vary by vehicle and conditions), so most cars go from low to full overnight. For a household doing regular runs across the Central West, that’s the difference between always having a full battery in the morning and constantly topping up.
Single-phase (7kW) vs three-phase (22kW)
Most Cowra homes are single-phase, which supports a 7kW charger - plenty for overnight charging. Many rural blocks, sheds and older farmhouses out this way already have three-phase power, and that opens the door to a 22kW charger for much faster top-ups.
The catch is that your car has to support the faster rate, and not all of them do. Before you spend up on a 22kW unit, it’s worth checking:
- Whether your property has single-phase or three-phase supply
- The maximum AC charge rate your specific EV accepts
- How much driving you actually do day to day (7kW is enough for most people)
There’s no point paying for 22kW if your car caps out lower or you only need a nightly top-up.
It needs its own dedicated circuit
This is the important bit. An EV charger should never be run off an existing power point or shared circuit. It draws a heavy, sustained load for hours at a time, and an old outlet or shared circuit was never designed for that. Done wrong, it’s a real fire risk.
A proper install means a dedicated circuit run straight from the switchboard, correctly sized cable, and the right RCD protection for EV charging. This is licensed electrical work - our EV charger installation is designed, installed, tested and certified to the wiring rules, so you’ve got documented proof it was done safely. If anyone offers to “just wire it into the shed power point”, walk away.
Charging from your own solar
The Central West gets plenty of sun, and if you’ve got panels on the roof, charging your car off your own generation is close to free driving. Some smart, solar-aware chargers - like the Zappi or certain Fronius setups - can watch what your solar is exporting and divert that surplus into the car instead of sending cheap power back to the grid.

Can your switchboard handle it?
Adding a charger means adding a decent chunk of load to your home. Older Cowra homes with ageing switchboards sometimes don’t have the spare capacity or the safety devices a modern install needs. When we come out for a quote, we check the board first.
Sometimes there’s room to add the circuit as-is. Other times the board is full, lacks proper RCD protection, or is simply too old to work with safely - and a switchboard upgrade is the sensible first step. We’ll tell you straight which camp you’re in, no upselling.
A quick note on plugs
In Australia the Type 2 connector is the standard for home AC charging, and nearly every new EV sold here uses it. So a Type 2 wall charger will suit almost any car you’re likely to own now or next - one less thing to worry about.
